Hi, I'm also a new player but hopefully I can help you out a bit. :)

It seems that, even for ants, you need to have quite a few skillpoints already in your combat skill of choice (best to choose 1 and powerlevel it, rather than doing them all) and you also need to get some Strength, Con, and some basic armour.

For a new player like you or me, doing all that is going to take a long time. But as far as I know, there is no other way around it. Simply put, naked newbies cannot kill anything, not even ants. x)

It is possible to use unbuilt fireplace constructions to trap a mob, allowing you to safely pelt it with slingshot rocks. However, you won't hit anything unless your marksman skill is >20 or so. By that time, you can probably survive attacking things head-on anyway!

Hope that helps a bit. I'd stick with catching rabbits and chickens for now, if I were you. That's easiest to do if you stand right next to the rabbit before you rightclick to catch it, or it'll run away and you won't be able to catch up.

If you have hunting you can get rabbits and chickens and they give you one bone each.

First make sure you have a 2 x 2 square empty in inventory.

Find a hen, rooster or rabbit.

Wait until it stops moving.

Left click it.

When you stop moving because you collided with the animal and are therefore as close to it as possible right click the animal.

If it bolts you missed. If it vanishes you picked it up and it is in your inventory.

Right click the critter in inventory to wring its neck and then to butcher it. Bones, feathers, skin and meat will insue.

Make sure you cook the meat before you eat it. Raw meat carries e-coli, worms and salmonella, all of which can reduce your hard hit points.

Hope this helps.

It's not important what you have in hands. What's important is to have 2x2 slots free in your inventory, because that's how much space live bunnies and chickens take.

Nothing is needed when picking up rabbits and chickens. You can be holding stuff or not. It works either way.

But it is best to get them when they are in the open so you can manage a clean click. Rabbits under fir trees are my bete noir. I always end up with not much more than an abrupt face full of pine needle prickles.

If the damn critter bolts: Immediately left click the crossed swords beside its picture. This tells the critter that you have turned off aggro and it will still be running but not away from you. It will stop fairly soon so you can have another go at it. Also, with luck you will still be moving after it. You can put your speed up to run now if you want or just follow. If you hit a tree you will have to redirect yourself. Otherwise, with luck you will actually follow until it stops and then you will grab it, all without having to try a second grab.

i found it easier to kill a rabbit or chicken by accquiring the unarmed combat skill and punching a chicken thats very close to me instead of catching it

saves the 2x2 space and you only neede 1x2 aand you dont have to 'wring neck' ... makes me feel bad :(

Yay!

Save those rabbit skins! They are the beginning of the route to a nice leather backpack.... a bigger inventory!
