look for an optimum place to settle. find something that suits your taste. look for a river or lake if you want to live by one (there are advantages and disadvantages to living next to water). look for a grassland if you find that more to your liking. look for a village if you would like to join one. live in the forest if that is what you like. you are free to live anywhere that someone else doesn't already live.

Good concept threat tho.

I think it would be cool to hear what some other players like.
What type of terrain, why you like it, and maybe why you dislike other terrain.

im new and so far i have settled between in a peninsula for three reasons.

1) its close to the river
2) i have a clay depo really close
3) grassland is just across the river and shallow water for leeches

these are the three main reasons why i settled where i did, although i would like to hear you all's feedback as to whether this is a great place to permanently settle or just great for starters or i have gone about it the wrong way and its a terrible spot.

Something else to consider is whether you plan on raising sheep and cattle. If you are, you need to be able to walk back from the praire/grassland where you tame your animals.

I settled on a river after having making my first claim a couple of minutes walk from it. At some stage, probably after I can start mapping in earnest, I may look to move inland again assuming I decide to continue playing hermit (just to be less noticable).

Why be a hermit? Do you have any friends that you play with or talk to on a regular basis?

So you dont get griefed, safer on your own inland then with friends near a river.
