Usefulness of trees?

Postby VileThings » Tue Apr 06, 2010 1:13 am

What are the most interesting and useful trees to grow? Oaks seem to give the most bark and branches (and also three logs when cut down), while fir trees seem to give the most boughs. Apart from that there are apple and hazle-nut (though it's not (yet?) listed in the wiki, I suppose one can grow such a tree from a nut (y/n?)) for food, mulberry trees for silk production + food and willows for the look.

Is there any sense at all in growing birch, fir, elm or maple trees?

There are several products made from birch bark (basket, cup). I would assume that we will see more items being introduced over time.

Oaks, maples and pines grow slower.

Pines grow pretty fast. I'm not sure how they compare to birches, which may be the fastest growing tree.

Might you be confusing pines and firs? In my experience pines grow quite a bit slower than firs.

So apart from the growth speed and thus the faster access to higher quality wood there is no reason to plant one of the four mentioned trees?

You get more lumber per unit of time planting faster trees than slower, assuming you use the same area. They grow 2x slower (maybe even worse), but only give 1.5x lumber.

Oh, and I think willows grow faster than any other tree, but I haven't tested it properly.

willows are pretty quick, elms and birch seem to be about the same speed
