Is this a bad idea...?

Postby Blxz » Tue Apr 06, 2010 10:37 am

I found a nice settlement near a river, its walled up and claimed land. But the gates are open. Would it be particularly bad if I trespassed and took 1 seed of each type of crop they have back to my struggling area? Is that likely to be frowned upon or is there anything I can do to repay for the goods?

Well, they could kill you.

Yes, if they wanted to. Track me back to my (fairly well hidden) little homestead. What do you suggest? Should I just build a boat and do a big explore around?

You could also try to contact them to do a trade.

It really depends on the claim owner. Personally I wouldn't mind if someone took one seed of every one of my crops. Just don't get too greedy.

If you are set on taking smth, try at least leave a runestone saying you borrowed one seed of each. Maybe they won`t take it much to heart. But then, if their gates were broken, they might think it was you (your scents?).

I heard your heartfire disappears when you build it in a cave and then log out. Maybe try removing your HF that way so they won`t kill you when you are offline. All tracks disappear after some time, if in that time no one found you, maybe you`ll be safe :) I do not know how long you can keep scent in inventory though, but i know they are spent tracking you. Eventually there will be nothing to track you with.

If you don't have a hearth you can be summoned anywhere. And you can't build hearths in caves anyway.

you can't build your hf in a cave, you're referring to the time when you used to be able to carry your hf, and you can't do that any more. even if you could, if you don't have a hf your scents are summonable everywhere so that would be the opposite of what you wanted.

to the op, unless you have the vandalism skill you wouldn't be able to harvest seeds off of a claim. your best bet would be to leave a runestone asking him to contact you via forum pm.

I have done something similar for pumpkin and poppy. I only did it on a settlement with no claim/village stuff and one that looked like the farms hadn't been touched in weeks (mostly reverted tiles). If you are a good neighbor and replant what you take in a case like that, I can see it being ok; however, I wouldn't do it on a farm that looked like it was actively being cared for (in that case I would definitely visit a few times looking for someone to trade with).
