How to get clay?

I would say that I have gotten off to a fairly decent start, built up a house have a budding farm/leather industry going up, found grassland and swamps on adjacent side of the river but..

I just don't get how you find clay. I've found it at random, but I need about 45 so this isn't going to work.. Can it be explained?

it's in shallow water, look in different areas, a q10 spot will only give 1 clay for a large area, you'll be able to get a lot out of a higher q spot.

So I have to find higher quality clay deposits if I want to find more in a map area?
