A distressing surprise.

I was walking along the shore looking for clay and fish, when I saw that there was a village right on the other side of the river's coast! Even worse, I saw that they had built a road to the river and sailed a boat to my continent, but they strangely left two dreamcatchers in the boat. I didn't take them out of kindness and fear, but I do not know what I should do. Should I meet up with these people and hope that they aren't mass murderers or thieves? Or should I camp in my house and sleep for a week or two so that they can't kill me, and then escape from the ruins of my home once the coast is clear? Maybe I should build some palisades to prepare for them?

What is the socially accepted way to respond to such events?

PS- If you are the new intruder, I hope that you won't take offense at my suspicion. I've had terrible experiences dealing with people in the past, especially one that resulted in the destruction of my land for no reason. But that's another story.

PPS- If you are friendly, please note that there is a bear in this area. One which almost certainly would have butchered me if I hadn't ran away.

I would tend to assume that, if they are settling in and setting up for serious farming/crafting, they are probably not interested in trashing their neighbors (until proved wrong). However, if all they have done is set up a house and a double palisade, I might worry a bit and think about moving.

That said, I would probably either ignore them completely or stop by and say hello (maybe ask if they are interested in trading at some point).

I decided to make a boat and explore their village. I found that it was a large, bustling Russian village. Apart from that, they appear to be extremely affluent in their power, featuring many objects I've never even seen before. One other thing that I noticed is that their village has no main gate, and many of the supplies are free for the picking. Maybe this means that they really are peaceful, and welcome newcomers? Or maybe they just want easy access in and out so that they can attack. In any case, there was no one online (or at least no one who responded when I asked). There was a runestone in the center, but I do not know what it means. Perhaps it is a message of war. Or a symbol of peace. I did not take anything from their village, but I'm still very worried about their existence.

Roughly translated it means "Main base for raiding that guy across the river"

"Here could be your advertising!" I think, basically, "Your ad here!" Most likely it's meant to be a rhetorical runestone which itself serves no purpose but to be ironic, like making a runestone that says "This is a rock." That or they like to trade?

Also, sometimes Google is spectacularly efficient. I literally searched "russian type" and found the website below. I still don't understand the Russian typeset but I can at least use it.

Unless you have a good reason to suspect they are hostile, it is a good idea to get to know your neighbors. A good way to tell how friendly they are would be to ask them if they are interested in trade (don't list all your valuables, of course). Also, it is best to initiate contact with them on from the outer part or outside of their territory. You don't want their first question to be "What the hell are you doing snooping around my place?".

I see, thank you Onionfighter and Sever. I met one of the villagers just now, and he appeared to be very kind and courteous. However, I could not help but notice a battering ram in the middle of the city. I guess I will have to wait until I can see what their real intentions are. In any case, they don't appear to be aggressive, which is a good sign. Maybe this will turn out well after all :D
