Ranging - Newb Question

Postby kobnach » Wed Jun 24, 2009 7:55 am

Why do scents disappear, sometimes reappearing? Today I walked into the camp of a kinsman, saw strange smoke plumes - and didn't know for sure what they were. I turned tracking off and they disappeared. QED? Well, when I turned tracking back on, no smoke plumes. Later that evening I walked into my own camp, which I'd been in and out of several times. I found multiple theft clues at each container. None had been there previously - but - were they new, or was it just that clues are now you see them and no you don't?

I think every time you go near a scent, or something, a check is made with your perception/exploration and the perpetrators intelligence/stealth. If it is successful for you, you see the scent.

the checks only made from time to time, afai have found out. like, if you toggle it on next to a scent, you dont see it yet. when you enter a building and exit it again, the scents appear.

Ah, I tried walking away - offscreen from the scent - and it didn't come back. It also didn't come back when I entered a building which (I was told) had had items stolen, to check for clues there. (I didn't find any; my two companions, more skilled than me, both did.) And I _still_ am not seeing clues in the original spot, whereas some I found elsewhere are continually present.
