How do I initiate combat?

I see a rat. I want to eat rat. How do I punch the rat? I try clicking it after activating the punch thing but it doesn't work. I've tried every combination of Shift + CTRL + ALT + RMB/LMB, nothing works.

I have no idea what I did, but now I have 3 rats in my inventory. How do I eat them?

do you have the hunting skill? you need that to attack an animal

Yeah, I just bought it and now it works. I have so little HP from the boars that whenever I try to kill a fox or whatever I am instantly incapacitated.

My meter is 0/93/100 - how close am I to death?

I'm randomly collapsing to the god damn ground now. I managed to get a rabbit, but it was so unfufilling it didn't even bring me out of red.

Try cooking the meat first. Also, look for apple trees.

That random collapsing is happening because your soft hitpoints have been completely drained, and you probably aren't wearing shoes anymore-- so you're getting 1-point damages from thorns as you travel over forest terrain. If you can, avoid it for a while until you regain some of your health. Beaches and shallow water are safe, that much I know from personal experience.

I'm not sure what to do here. My lack of food seems to be stymieing my "soft hitpoints" and the process of obtaining food is draining my food meter further than what it replenishes. I'm at 1 softpoint constantly, my friend's camp now has a boar in it, and randomly collapsing all the time for an unknown reason. I'm pretty screwed.

Also, I've had shoes this entire time. I got a thorn once, the rest are just utterly unexplainable. I'll be walking along in a clear area with no trees, shrubs, or anything and BAM. I'm down.
