Mining and how it Effects us

Postby Omniwar0801 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 4:37 am

Ok so I know that to find a mine you need to find rustroot.

Next step is to make rustroot extract.

So whats the next step. how do you find the mine after that and is it even possible to find mines anymore or do we have to wait till new parts of the map are added on?

To make the rustroot extract, you must have the Prospecting skill. With the prospecting skill also comes a Prospecting Action, under the Adventure menu. You must have rustroot extract in your inventory to use this action, and it will scan a 1000x1000-tile area around you for possible mine locations (giving results such as Mineral, 15% accessible, which means that it is 850 tiles away from you or something to that effect), upon which you need to build a mine hole. You should also get Yeomanry or Lawspeaking, or whatever you want so that you can claim the mine immediately. It's not a good idea to leave a mine in unclaimed territory. Good luck!

P.S. You should use "affects" instead of "effects" in the title. Affect is a verb, effect is a noun. ;)

To be fair, "effect" is also a verb, and its usage in the OP's title is not necessarily incorrect (though I doubt it is what he actually meant). Watch out, or this could be you (on the other end). ;)

Oh, no! I've been bested by someone more accomplished than me! :'(

Edit: By God, you're better than an American, and the American's willing to admit it. Give yourself a pat on the back.

usage Effect and affect are often confused because of their similar spelling and pronunciation. The verb affect usually has to do with pretense <she affected a cheery disposition despite feeling down>. The more common affect denotes having an effect or influence <the weather affected everyone's mood>. The verb effect goes beyond mere influence; it refers to actual achievement of a final result <the new administration hopes to effect a peace settlement>. The uncommon noun affect, which has a meaning relating to psychology, is also sometimes mistakenly used for the very common effect. In ordinary use, the noun you will want is effect <waiting for the new law to take effect> <the weather had an effect on everyone's mood>.

back to topic:
pretty much every mine has been claimed already. your only chances are overlooked caves and forest outskirts with no rivers nearby, the later being a bad idea to solo unless you can solo a bear and a boar or two. keep in mind that an already built mine spot will NOT show up upon prospecting even if the owner has left the game.

I find it hard to believe that every mine in the game has already been claimed. If they have though, that seems to be a pretty big design flaw that will hinder this game from growing any bigger.

The idea of limiting mines is never going to work unless they plan to continue resetting the world forever every few months. We either need them to be constantly added with every server reset, or have them die out and "respawn" regularly so they cycle. Alternatively we could just make it work like clay currently does where you'd have a "qspot" that the rustroot extract would find which would be a specific type of metal, or you could stick a mine hole anywhere you like and be able to mine the majority of the metals, just in lower qualities and quantities.

I'm sure there are some around, but they are likely in the remote corners where less players reside. I know at the least there are no mines at all within 1,000 squares of my property, as I tried using rustroot extract yesterday hoping to find something, but no luck. 1000x1000 is a pretty big area for no more mines to be placed in.

I really wish they'd tell us exactly how many mines are on the current map. A number like that would help determine if it's high enough or not. This may work at this point but, assuming this game gets more popular and brings in more players, it's going to quickly become far too few.

I'm pretty sure this is not entirely correct. It does scan a 1000 x 1000 area, but it's 500 tiles, incl. the tile you are occupying, in every major direction (N, E, S, W).
