Palisade Gates

To make a gate, do I need to make a new Palisade cornerpost with 100 blocks of wood, 10 leather, etc.?

You don't have to in order to have one gate, so long as you're wrapping the palisade around in a box shape. However to do a wall that doesn't connect to itself, or to do multiple gates, you will need to create new palisades to connect to.

My wall doesn't connect to itself mainly because my home is against a ledge, and if I try to enclose it, it will be far too long. Does that mean that I'm forced to build two starting cornerposts?
