Being a cook

Postby Blxz » Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:03 am

getting cooking skill higher sounds like the main thing. Farming for the produce. Is survival required by anything? Any other skills?

Thanks.

EDIT: Also, is what attribute is required? Dexterity? Intelligence? None of the above?

According to the Wiki, Perception has an impact on cooking. You'll also want to plant trees for the high-quality fuel and clay for better ovens. Trees rely on farming (which luckily you'll already have) and clay is independent of skills.

Farming is based on dexterity as well from what I've heard. In general for farming I try to work on perception and dexterity, and farming and cooking. Survival can be useful for just about anything, as what it does is raises quality level of things collected from nature. This includes herbs from foraging, hides, meat, and bones from hunting, and tree products. Considering your cooking will likely include some herbs at some points, it might help, however you won't find herbs higher than q10 unless they're on quality soil, so it's largely dependent on the area you end up in. For instance, we have a q45 soil spot in the middle of our grasslands here, so once in a while I get clovers off of it, and that gets me q45 milk from aurochs.

Fucking wiki and it's stupid farming based on dexterity. FARMING IS NOT BASED ON DEXTERITY.

a man need only strike another to make him evil."

I actually read it around here and on the irc channel. I only use the wiki to see what skills I need for specific actions and what materials are required for specific items.

Yeah... The wiki and the How quality works topic mention neither of those. I have heard the Dexterity thing elsewhere, though, and it doesn't surprise me. False information spreads like wildfire... Everybody thought Industry kicked in when you lit smelters back in the first world, and boy was that a pet peeve of mine.

I'd question the usefulness of Survival if you're intending specifically to specialize in cooking. The only forageables involved in the baking tree are blueberries, chantrelles, and if you're lucky like Zamte, milk (through four leaf clovers). If you're willing to throw the LP to another skill, go for it, but if you're in a group with a dedicated hunter/gatherer I don't think you'd need it.

I'd sooner take carpentry as a tertiary skill, for cheese trays, herbalist tables (for beer & raisins), butter churns etc.

Ok, So cooking, carpentry, perception and farming. That sounds like a tidy package.
