Either someone stole from me, or everything decomposed.
I willing to believe it all decomposed.

Is the field part of your claim? If yes, someone stole them, if not, unclaimed crops are an invitation for everyone.

Think I ran across that farm in my wanderings and if it is the same the cliam covers the crops so looks like theft to me.

if a farm is forsaken, you just see crops on unplowed land. that means either someone went "burned ground" on you (common griefing: harvest off everything and throw it into the next river), or used "vandalism" to harvest crops under your claim. although without the ranging skill you probably can not tell if anything criminal was done to your fields. and without your claim boundaries in the screenshot, we can not tell griefing from vandalism too.
