This is true. But also remember that a Highly skilled and stat farmer, will not plant his crops in an Unclaimed field. So My oppinion(and my rule of thumb) is if you do come by an open field that's unclaimed and/or abbanded, harvest what you Need and make sure you replant.
Case in point. I have a lil plot of ground and i need fibers for me Herb. Table. So as i'm looking for WWW in hopes to get me some fibers(the long way) I come across a Farm thats unclaimed and kinda shotty(as in there is decay and the plow rows are all haphazard) So I pick 8 hemp plants, gather the fibers and take the 8 worst seeds and then I use the plow that's there(after i put a block or 2 in it to fix it) and make another plow row and replant the 8 best seeds. Well as time passes and my homestead is looking sweet, i tend to go back there and doodle so to speak. The last time i went back there I had put in at least 5 - 10 seed plow rows full of carrots, onions, hemp and flax. Then put in 3-8 seed plow rows of grapes. then turned around made a winepress and fixed up the cart and kiln. To me this is rewarding, cause i have to wait for me crops to mature b4 I can get LP, and I dont wanna just walk through the Forest and kill trees left and right just to gain LP.
On another note. whenever I see other people's places, If i'm bored, I'll go there and try to finish thier construction projects. LOL At this one spot some dude had like a 4 by 4 claimed plot(which he was in sleeping with 2 urns. he had only started a plow field. So i went over there and plowed 5-10 seed rows, and then used all my excess(after coming back to the homestead) seeds to plant this guy a hemp row, carrot row, onion row and a Flax row. I been doing that now to all my neighbors since there ain't much to do at me homestead.
