Noob Cabin Building

I'm trying to build my first little log cabin. I found a sheltered place and put down cobblestone for every square the base of the cabin sits on. None the less, I'm getting big red "CAN"T PUT THAT THERE!!! HAHAHA N00b I pwn yoo!" messages. Could someone please either direct me to the instructions, or explain what I'm doing wrong?

ie. Can you build next to cliffs/ravines?
Does the foundation need to be bigger than the house?
Are houses forbidden unless you sent Jorb and Loftar $5 and a picture of yourself dressed as a cow?

The base for a log cabin should be 5x5 paved stone.

and the Timber house needs to be on a 7x7 area. I like to make it one Row longer int he Front kinda like a front porch
