Build a Well

Ok, so i'm confused as to how I get a tile of water to build a well on. For instance, I found a well in the middle of a forest...how did a single tile of water get there? If you can tell me how to get my own well, please tell me, thanks!

You need a dowsing rod to find hidden, underground water.
It will occasionally give you a radar ping to help you find it.
Once you've found a spot, build the well there.
