"Battle character", building one?

Was wondering, what's the common setup for a battle character.

Our village is still small but it's a good time to start building our defence, and with that we need a strong military to thwart those who would attempt to steal from us or attack us.

What stats/skill values should I increase right off the bat?

str and unarmed if you have no access to metal, and melee if you do
