This game pretty much covers most genres of MMOs, so I don't see how you could lose fun.
The way I see it, you can easily go ahead and make it adventure, set goals, make your own RPG (write your story on the forums or something, whatever), grief, build, play as an RTS (but with multiple people clearly...).
I think the funnest part has to be the village aspect. I'm sure that the whole "Wow, I can kill a lvl X bear" part is fun getting there, but I'd have to say the real thrill is in dealing with village relations (both inter- and intra-), fighting, playing with friends, making new friends, and 'splorin.
I mean it's really not that hard to have fun. I haven't figured out the combat system as well as I'd like so I'm not tackling bears or anything without a sling (you're right, it is indeed too easy)
