Way back in World 1, Bottleneck had only barely depleted our iron mine (which was the first what, 3 months of playing?). We had some pretty dedicated miners, too. From what I've heard there's been at least one upgrade to mine size so they're even bigger now.
Back when you could have your own personal mines for merely a small fortune in trees (back when trees were also a precious(er) resource), I would generally mine one cardinal direction until I got tired of dragging a cart that far, then start another, and so forth*. Not that I ever got terribly far since it was two people, tops.
*technically I made neat little rooms and pretended I was playing Dwarf Fortress! Until I got tired and just destroyed them. I did want to be 'buried' in a mine but never died. But that's beside the point.
