What is wrong with this smelter?

I have ore smelter built of 54q bricks, also I use 4 charcoals of 41 q to light it up. And sometimes I get iron of 47 q and more frequently of 25q. How can this be possible? is it some bug?

I've seen some quality increase in my bars after i've increased smithing, although it was tin for me.

Hmm.... what is the smithing level of the people lighting the kilns? Maybe that would make a difference?

No skills and stats influence quality of smelters output. Either your coal isn't as homogeneous as you claim, or it's a bug (unlikely).
