Get your Per and explore up enought to start seeing spindily taproots and nettles. You can use those for strings to make a sling. I think you also need to have the foraging skill.

Taproot is a string already, just keep it in inventory while crafting something or put it in a build place.

Yes, you need foraging. Good foods for perception are carrots and lamb sausages. Carrots are required by Farming, while sausages are required by sausagemaking. Sausagemaking costs 600 lp, farming costs 400 lp.
