HELP Im gonna start a new village

Postby PandarianGamer » Thu May 13, 2010 2:52 am

Alright, So my buddies told me to go on to this game called Haven and Hearth. I like this game, but I spawned pretty much in a middle of a forrest. I kinda want to start a small little village for me and my buds, so, what do you suggest I do? Like, I know i need a clay thingy to get clay and start making pots and what not. Please help a noob out! What should I do first???

Build a house, get your skills up. Start making leather and stuff. Go nature on the nature/industry slider.
Work on exploration as a skill and try and get that up high.
Once you get to level 7-10 wild windsown seeds will start appearing. Get them and dry them on a drying rack for a day or so.
Plant the crops you get. Keep drying seeds.
Make leather.
Look up the wiki when you realise you don't know how to make leather.
Remember to keep scouting the area checking for good quality clay, dirt and water. Fish are also helpful for newbs.
Eventually you want to get your exploration and perception up to very high levels so you can see rustroot on forest tiles. From that make rustroot extract then begin your seacrh for a mine. Once you find a mine THATS where you want to start your village.

All your friends can just go about and work on other skills, hunters are useful. if you can get your survival and marksman up very high and make good quality slings then you can hunt for food. You will need some deer antlers and stuff to start a village anyway. A village can happen much further down the track. For now work on your skills and develop your characters. Have a little unofficial village with just yourself and friends building houses close by. Good luck.

What do you mean? And how do I change the slider to nature? I cant move it for some reason. Also, how do I get a flax field started, or any field? Do i have to take from other people, or is there other means of getting seeds?

The sliders can be moved once every couple of hours. the closer you are to change on the change/tradition slider the more often you can change them. Also you get much more LP the more change you are. BUT DON'T move change. It will automatically move every time you change somehting else. Up the top is a grey or green bar. If its green you can move one slider by 1 bit. if its grey point to it and it will tell how many in-game hours are left. (3 in-game hours to 1 real life hour). These hours have to be played. You can't log off or just go afk. Will take a while.

As i said in my first post. Once you get exploration skill to about level 8 you will begin to see WWW's. Little white flowery things on the ground that you can harvest. When you dry these on a drying rack (takes a while) you will get a random seed. Flax, hemp, carrots, wheat, etc. There are about 13 crops I think. If there is someone nearby with crops ask them if you can have a seed of each type. most people are pretty good. I am not, don't ask me coz I am not generous today.

And what i mean about rustroot is: once you get it and the 'prospecting' skill you can find a metal mine. Metal is required for many high end things. Almost no point having a village without a way to get metal. If you have Q 70+ clay but no metal there is a good chance you can trade it for lots of metal. Otherwise it is far easier to scout out and try and find your own mine.

It might even be a good idea for you to join a village for the first bit so you can learn the ropes and understand how things work. Play the game however you want, just remember there is no point having a village just for the sake of it. Access to resources of any kind as long as its very high quality is important..

They are what breathe fresh air into this game and remind us of our beginnings and morality.

Bah, morality dies under my sword. I have become jaded with the world.

Its still good to try and help out the noobs though. Ppl were there for me. Who knows they might save my life one day. Lots of people have died in my place lately. I do love noobs that don't act noobish in-game.

Optimism? It's not too hard to get a village started. The hard part is keeping it going and keeping your villagers active.

I haven't played as long as some people here (not sure how long the people in this thread have played though), but I can say that the best way you'll start off fast and actually get somewhere is by having different people choose certain professions and going with that all the way to start off.

Depending on how many people you have is how you end up doing things really, but you probably want at LEAST:

An explorer (will eventually catch mussels too)
A farmer (can start off fishing or exploring until you have your first few WWW)
A hunter (can also dry/tan leather, which you'll want a lot of early on) **

Explorer will be the only one who can start right off the bat, everyone else can pretty much just get things up and running right away, he will want to pump Exploration and eat PERception food, if you live somewhere that's truly near no one else, you'll want to find rustroot as soon as possible to go searching for a mine.

The farmer will want to find things to do around the place (for anyone without a profession yet, fishing is fine to start off, or building things around town). Farmer doesn't need any base attribute (some people say DEX/PER, do NOT believe them, most posts by older players on these forums say the exact opposite so unless someone wants to run a few tests and prove it otherwise, it probably doesn't), but should raise the skill value Farming.

Hunter should raise Survival super high, and until he can hunt (Explorer finds 5 strings and makes him a sling), this makes him the best candidate for fishing as he can cook meat. Assuming the first sling you get is q10, a Marksmanship of around 20 will do, although you can start with a Marksmanship of 4 if need be. Make sure that you 'box in' whatever you're hunting with construction signs (build fire, not wicker basket).

There are tons of other jobs, and at least one person should try and get most of the skills.

For Personal Beliefs, you should all put your Peaceful to max right away (Thus also maxing your Change, giving you 360% the LP you normally get), then go for Nature, Barbarism, and Life. Only exceptions I know are hunters/miners, miners would want full Industry, and hunters may want more damage in exchange for that 60% extra LP (I'd definitely say the LP wins though).

If you don't know something the wiki is okay, but if it seems wrong, it probably is, the wiki needs a lot of work, and Darkren is working on getting that fixed up so we can do it. Until then if the wiki seems wrong, searching/asking on the forums is probably your best bet (or the IRC room if you like IRC #haven on the synIRC network)
