How do I get keys for my palisades?

When I finish a palisade gate, does my get-a-key-free card activate, or do I make the key?

Try it and see....

You will get one key. Name it what you want. But you will need clay and nuggets of metal to make new keys.

and keep the key on your person at all times because they can and will be stolen.

I made several gates and never got a key. Does it show up somewhere other than your inventory?
