For making large maps do must people use the in game cartography skill or is there some sort of special mapping program one could download and use?

I think there is a program you can download that auto maps for you. Although ppl in my village either in-game cartography and some of them just take screenshots and cut and paste. Guess it depends ont he area and what you are using the map for.
