Fishing, help please

I don't have a clue how to fish. I got the pole, I put the string on the pole, I attached a hook, then I attached a worm. I press the fishing button in the adventure button, left click on the water, but my character attempts to walk into the water instead, rather than fish. So I tried right clicking, but that seemingly does nothing too.

I am clicking far enough away from the shore. I do have the skill. I do have the rod equipped. There are fish visibly jumping out of the water.

you have to either be in a boat or standing in the shallow water to fish from the river. in the shallow water click the tile immediately next to your tile to fish.
