Stone laying

Is there a way to remove the stones after you lay them on the ground?
And can you not lay stones on the grass or am I crazy? They worked fine on the beach, but when I tried it on the grass it won't lay any stones. I have stones in my inventory, so I know that's not the problem. :/
If it helps any, I'm not in the forest with firs, but with birches. D: Sorry, I'm new.

Plow the ground to lay stones.
Use a Wooden or Metal Plow to plow the ground, then you can lay your stones

You can grass over paved ground, and plow over grassed ground. The plowed land will return to normal land eventually.
