Making cast iron

Do you have to keep the smelter going for a certain amount of time, or is it like baking where you can insert a certain amount of fuel and then fire and forget?

Four pieces of charcoal usually does it. Put in five if you want to be extra-extra careful, but it doesn't matter if you put in too much because unlike baking your iron ore cannot burn.

It's like baking, if you need to re-load fuel it's not a re-start of ticks.

Additionally there's currently a bug where you can leave the ore in the smelter for an extremely long time, and then smelt it with a single piece of charcoal because it accumulates "smelting ticks" even when the thing isn't lit.

be careful when you get to the steel making process though, it's a good idea to put your crucible somewhere WAY out of the way and keep any steel you make in your inventory. Large stockpiles cause a lot more grief than joy it seems.

Left click it in your inventory so it attaches to your mouse, and right click the smelter.
