How do I make gates to complete fences? I just can't seem to find out.

Cornerposts need to be flanking both sides of the two-tile-wide gate. Also, the would-be gate needs to be on buildable terrain (grass or paved; obvious preference to paved due to less decay). If you have a palisade or brickwall, make sure the cornerposts aren't sealed, too.

Okay, so if I'm looking at the back of my fence, (it's a normal wooden fence) how many tiles of fence should there be?

No actual fence is required, just the two aligned cornerposts with two empty tiles between them. Mind you, if you've used shift-placement to build them, it won't work, unless they've both been extended from the same shift-placed starting point.
