Where the clay at?

i.e., is a certain Perception*Exploration required to find clay spots? I realize you can get some out of any shallow water, but in my experience that's only been one piece in so big an area. Apparently there exist clay spots that one can collect from indefinitely, but I haven't seen any...

They don't exist visually. Boat around digging for clay until you get one that's higher than quality 10; you've found a clay deposit and will get clay until you harvest enough to diminish the quality under 10; then you'll have to wait for it to regenerate slowly above 10 again.
