I've no idea where you are, but if you head in any one direction for several hours (which requires a boat), you'll reach the edge of the known world. People tend to travel those once in a while, but the outer areas are still sparsely populated (the world gets an expansion at the edges every so often), and thus are mostly up for grabs. Check
here for info on locating mines if you aren't yet familiar with that.
As for terrain...mines are fairly rare, so they generally determine where you'll live. Aside from that, most terrain types have some purpose or other...but I recommend locating nearby grassland, moor (plains), heath, etc; the animals there are passive and useful for various materials. The bulk of Haven's planet is currently forest, so don't worry too much about finding them...having nearby trees is generally necessary, though, so try not to live far outside them unless you're willing to walk.
While you're at it, keep an eye out for
clay, and maybe some decent
water for cooking and such. That should cover most moving concerns, I guess.
