So Hypothetically, if I were to thief something from someone on a different character, drop said Hypothetical hot item in a basket for another Hypothetical character to come pick up said goods would the second character leave his scent as well or would I get away with it?

he would follow the scent to you or your hearth fire and figure out your nowhere near the place you left the goods so the guy claiming he didnt take anything will be believed specially cause youd have to have trespassed there aswel to put it in and the first guy can get that scent aswel

The hypothetical second person would need to walk on the hypothetical claim to be able to be tracked, and have the items recovered.

So no, the second person, unless (s)he walked on the claim and stole something too won't be tracked. Providing the basket isn't left on the claim.
