Hello everyone! Where should I start?

First, let me start by apologizing in advance if this post is not allowed or if there is some special thread set up for it. I glanced over the rules but didn't see anything against it and I didn't see any threads so... here I am. If this is indeed breaking some rule or whatnot, I'd be more than happy to simply delete and move on with my life.

Anyways, now that that's out of the way, Hi! I found this game randomly while browsing for something new to play and am really impressed with the concept. I'm trying, struggling more like it, to learn the basics and get somewhat set up but I'm pretty much a blind man walking in Escher's Staircase painting. So I figured I would come here, to the forums, and introduce myself to you fine folk and, hopefully, get some insight as to how I can at least START to be somewhat successful in this world of yours.

So yeah, that's about it really. Hello and please help!

Since this is now in the How do I? section, I suppose I'll ask a more specific question. How do I fish? I have the skill learned and I have a fishing pole but I am unable to fish! Do I need some form of bait? And if so, where can I acquire said bait?

fishing poles need String, Hook, and Bait. you l-rclick each part onto the pole in that order. then look for fish jumping out of water and have at it

Personally, i went with foraging, lumberjacking and carpentry. That allowed me to see the roots and nettles required as string for fishing, and it allowed me to get access to wood. Then you should head to get yeomanry to claim your land.
Mind you: with a claim you're still far from safe from thieves, but at least you're not in the completely "free candy" region.
Another three hints:
- run away from people with bows. They might be up to evilery, since you won't notice them engaging you until the first arrow is shot.
- hunger is good, since you increase your physical stats (strength, dexterity, etc.) by eating stuff.
- do not eat raw meat.

as a sidenote: i like the "blind man in MC Escher's work"-metaphor.

Hmmm... I just got Foraging so I'll go with Lumberjacking followed by Carpentry.
