Farming the farmy farm of farming farminess

Postby blainemono » Thu Jun 03, 2010 4:09 pm

So my little garden has grown to a full-fledged farm that only needs a scarecrow to be totally awesome.

Seed logistics starts to be a moderate pain in the ass though. A wheat field of 6x12 squares yields 216 seeds, which takes a full inventory of seed bags to hold. Then I have to manually sort through it and pick best seeds to replant and worst seeds to discard, every damn harvest. Not the most exciting activity to be sure.

A question for all the veteran farmers then: are there any techniques that help ease this burden a little bit?

On a somewhat related topic, I am trying to make my home look a little bit more like a home and a little less like a walled-out part of the forest. Paving the shit out of this bitch, as they say in the better parts of this world

I've encountered a couple of slight problems though: first, a tree fell on my local rock and now a piece of trunk is sticking out of it, looking awful. Is there a way to get rid of it without destroying the rock?

Second, I got several unpaved squares hidden beyond the roof of the house, they sprout ferns and annoy me. Trouble is, these squares can be targeted for plowing, but for some reason not for laying stones on. Is there a way to get around that other than demolising the house?

On a totally unrelated topic, I am trying to place my home on the world map. Traveling around, the biggest (but deserted) settlements I've found were New Brodgar and Golgotha. Can anyone tell me where they are supergrid-wise?

Thanks.

well, i try to answer your farm problem telling you that IMHO seed bags are just good to carry a lot of seeds around or store them

for your farm try this:

Code: Select all
011111111110
02222222222A
B33333333330
044444444440
055555555550
06666666666C
D77777777770
088888888880

thats a 10x8 field if you have a merchant robe or make it 8x8 if you don't
the numbers are the rows you harvest, odd numbers left to right, even numbers right to left
ABCD are chest or other sorting containers
after harvesting 1 row your inventory is full, place row 1 and 3 in container A, 2 and 4 in B etc.
plow the shit and for replanting you take the best seeds out of the containers

for the rest you could come back with seed bags or food troughs or whatever

Place your mousecursor over an container's inventory window and Use shift+ctrl+mousewheel to sort by quality when transferring.

If you're sorting seeds don't use seedbags. Make each row or column as many as 1/3 your inventory (8 w/ backpack, 10 w/ merch robe too). Each field can be as wide or deep as convenience accommodates. Place a chest at the end of each row to use ctrl+shift scroll Q sort the 8 or ten best seeds into the chest. Dump the excess however is appropriate, pick up product, replant. Move to the next row.

incidentally if you make 8x8's or 10x10's respectively you can rotate the chest and harvesting alignment so that Q develops more evenly.

New Brodgar is in D3. It is not abandoned, but much of the time there is no one in the village logged in.
