Looking for a mine, anyone have tips on Prospecting?

Postby joojoo1975 » Fri Jun 04, 2010 1:14 am

Greetings.

ok i read up a ili bout prospecting, i have th roots, made the extract, read that it has a 1k tile radious(basically a 5 mini map radious or the minimap ur on and the top, bottom, left and right minimap as well)

i been heading in a westerly direction now for over12 hours(over 3 days) and i still havent found a bloody mine. Of course i just could have crappy luck, cause i have yet to find uncharted wilderness(guess the northern reaches is where everybody wants to be)

could any of you veteran mine locators, pls give me some tips?

thanx for your replies.

m8, the last mountain i found i spent a half hour going around it and throguh it best i could. either i have horrible luck, bad eyesight or something, i didnt find a cave :( i also prospected it like 9 times(1 for each directional face and 5 times random while i was going through the middle of it.) Now considering that your prospecting skill does a 1000 tile radious, i'm pretty sure that mountain is covered. If you mean to take a look in the caves of mountains, well i guess i just aint that lucky. i mean your best chance of finding the cave on said mountain is southern/eastern side, but like i said i went all around it and through it multiple times.

but if i'm doing something that's not quite right, ple let me know.

The idea of a mine that doesn`t fit in one prospect circle (2000x2000 tiles) is just... mind-boggling.
BTW, most mines I found were decidedly NOT on mountains. And even fewer were in caves.

Tips are as usual. Go in one direction until you reach the end of map, then go ahead prospecting the bordering SG. Also, try to check every cave you encounter. Try to keep a map of where you go with prospecting circles to avoid missing some spots.

if there's a mine ON the mountain you probably just need to use prospecting once at its edge...
maybe twice (like left edge, right edge...)
we found all our mines on mountains, but im glad to haer most were not.
i wouldn't search for caves, as they are difficult to find (+difficult to prospect +difficult to mine)

just go further on prospecting great distances inland

That's not what radius means at all. You seem to think that prospecting covers mere 3x3 minimaps, or 300x300 tiles. That's roughly 150 tiles radius (well, not really a radius, because it's a square). Prospecting actually covers every tile within 1000 tiles of distance (a circle 2000 tiles across, or a bit less than half a supergrid). Your average mountain is like 100 tiles in radius.

Basically, you're wasting time prospecting too often and walking in circles. Just walk in a straight line and prospect roughly every half hour of constant walking.

i thought prospecting covered the mini map ur currently in, as well as the minimap above you, below you, left of u and right of u basically a 5 minimap range with u being right in the middle.

obviouslly i am wrong. i also thought a tile was like 1 spot of ground that u dug up or 1 plot where u lay stone.

thankyou for getin me straight m8.

This is true, actually. That 300=150 part just means that since we're talking about a radius, it would go 150 in every direction, thus covering roughly 300x300 tiles total (less because the corners are rounded off).

So yeah, a minimap is apparently 100 tiles, meaning a prospecting check would detect metal 10 maps' length in any direction; since it's a circle, it won't just detect entire grids, but it's huge, so it shouldn't matter too much. Just keep hiking and watch out for caves, I guess.

Can I do only one prospecting in the cave? Or it will be not enough - need go deeper into cave?
