Stats raising

Postby changuringa » Tue Jun 08, 2010 7:48 am

Ok so I've been playing for two days and I'm loving it so far, living on an abandoned camp and earning LP by digging like a bitch I got to learn many skills but now I'm concerned about stats, I read that there were only 3 stats worth raising, I made the mistake of depend on fishing to get food and this has raised my Intelligence (which I'm aware its mostly worthless) and now raising other stats will be harder, after eating A LOT of rabbit meat all I got was 1 point in agility so my doubts are...

Which would be these 3 only stats worth raising? or which do you consider are the most important ones.

Is there an easier way to raise agility or strength when you just begin?

I started to worry about this because from what I understand if you die all you can get back is the LP you didn't spend and a % of your stats, making all the work spent getting skills wasted, of course I would love if someone could clear this out for me.

Only three stats worth raising? wut? That may have been true in the yesteryears of yore, but now all of them aren't a complete waste (though INT is the least useful by far).

STR for damage, AGI for traveling, CON for HP, DEX for crafting, PER for foraging (and ranged hunting), INT for authority generation (yeeaah), CHA for authority and feasting, and PSY for high-end crafting. (I'm sure there are other uses I'm not thinking of). Honestly, I just keep mine all in balance and I do fine playing carebear (but I'm not exactly a specialist, especially not in combat).

In any case, you're worrying overmuch. Once you're able to farm or hunt properly (hint: first one is much easier in general), pushing stats isn't hard even if you're woefully 'out of balance' and the varied diet bonus helps. Just eat what you can get your hands on and work on those windsown weeds (or pilfering unclaimed crops) and it'll sort itself out.

As for death, I admit I've never died so I could be misremembering secondhand accounts, but I'm fairly certain all your non-incrementable skills have their LP value returned and reduced by whatever percentage is appropriate for your Tradition/Change personal belief. And since you can't do jack without them, it's hardly a 'waste' in any sense.

  • Strength. Used for melee damage, damaging structures, and smithing. Bested raised by bear and boar meat and pumpkins.
  • Agility. Used for travel distance capability and reduction in minimum range damage. Bested raised by Ring of Brodgar or Honey Buns.
  • Intelligence. Used for Authority Gain, Stealth (currently broken), and Bone Clay crafting. Best raised by many fishes, fox meat, and blueberry pies.
  • Constitution. Used for determining maximum health. Best raised by cow meat, pea pie, and pumpkin pie.
  • Perception. Used for finding foragables on ground and minimum damage. Bested raised by carrots, and deer meat.
  • Charisma. Used for Authrity Gain, certain group combat maneuvers, and feasting presence. Best raised by grapes and lamb meat.
  • Dexterity. Used for Bone Clay crafting and cloth and silk crafting. Best raised by mussels, chicken chorizo, and some fish products.
  • Psyche. Used for Jewelry, necklace, and silk crafting. Best raised by mussels, butter steamed cave bulbs, and mussels.
When you die your character can inherit 25% (full change) - 75% (full tradition) of the stats and LP sum.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.

Yeah I tried to become a hunter, even got my archery skill before lumberjacking but that didn't work, when I tried to use "shot" the aiming bar wouldn't raise at all, maybe it has something to do with the fact I just have the initial 1 in marksmanship, besides all the animals I've tried to fight this far were level IX, X deers and foxes that almost killed me, but I had my most near-death experiences with a god damn bear that walks around and attacks me for no reason while I'm just there chilling and digging all cool, I'm planning on getting a leather armor and leather boots (right after making my backpack) and go rape that bear.

Something tells me it will be long before I can even fight back...

Anyway thanks Koe and Dataslycer for answering about the stats and the death penalty, I guess I feel much more relieved now.

Keep in mind that running out of SHP (the first number) is just a KO, not a death. (A lot of people seem to confuse those).

Leather armor is a good idea - it gives you room for error. That said, you're right, you're a long way off from even hoping to dent that bear short of attacking from a boat or some sort of wall. Raising your Marksmanship will increase the speed of the aim bar (use slings, not bows by the way), but it's probably not worth bothering with 'til it's in the 20s, and even then it'll be a pain taking on weaker animals. Much less the stuff that bites back by default.

Yeah got knocked out a few times before realizing I could go back to my heart fire, all I used to do was wait for get up and keep running to my house, he did a lot of damage to my HHP but I've recovered most of it, thank god for leeches, should go back to the swamp for more but last time I tried I just ended up losing more HHP, dem fucking boars.
I have gather the materials and will soon build a boat, my intention is finding someone to illustrate me about nearby villages and, if possible, trade some goods, luckily the first person I encounter won't try to murder me. Here are a few more noobish questions....

How do you trade? is there a command like in other games cause I feel the other person could just take all my stuff from a basket and walk away.

Which stuff in particular do most players find valuable for trading? right now the most valuable thing I have I can think of is leather.

Travel Weariness, wikia says it won't let me "quick travel", no idea to what refers, all I want to know is if the bar hits 100% will I be able to log out and teleport back to my heart fire? (also is there another way to do this without logging out?)

Thanks in advance.

You should keep reusing the same leeches, just put them in a container for half a day or so to unbloat. They raise in quality up to your constitution score when they suck blood. Leeches drain 1/10 of their quality worth of SHP each time the suck blood, but they also restore the same amount of HHP when they actually restore it. So higher quality leeches heal you faster.

There's no secure trade interface, so yes, trade involves a fair deal of trust. But I have never been ripped off and I've done a fair deal of trading.

Leather isn't in very high demand. Villages with brick walls will buy all the bricks you can make, they need tons for repairs. You might also have luck with bone glue and rope, but it's not guaranteed. Sturgeon, eel and plaice should also be interesting to most people.

You can always travel to your hearth, so TW is irrelevant for that. Quick travel is teleporting from crossroads to crossroads (only buildable on village grounds), and you can't do it if your TW bar is too full (or the destination is too far/your agility is too low).

I saved 3 of them and didn't realize they could unbloat.

Good, this abandoned camp has a kiln already built, although I had to repair it, can I use any kind of clay to make bricks? I've just tried it with acre clay and I only seem able to get one every once in a while when I dig in the mudflat.

EDIT: I desperately need someone to tell me how do I get off the boat, I'm next to the land trying to walk right and left clicking but nothing happens :S

Ctrl-left click when you're next to the coast to leave your boat.
