Removing tree from the ground

At what stage of growth can I remove a tree from the ground ? ( in 1st stage there is a option chop, but after clicking nothing happens )

many have that problem if they misplant, I think I remember hearing about some trick, but I just wait until stage 2 if i make a planting error. You can chop it then.
