Map Grid System and Direction

Postby johnsmith » Fri Jun 18, 2010 3:32 pm

If this be the wrong thread OR this topic has been discussed before (which I am sure it has) please just post a link to it. There are thousands of posts and, yes, I must be too lazy or stupid to find the right one to answer this question so please be nice to me.

There is no compass, I do get "lost" with a sense of direction (especially when the mini map is not working), This place is huge....... How does a person know what grid they are in and how does the grid system work? (I.E. from top left super grid right to left c1 c2 c3, next line of super grids b1 b2 b3), and if someone who is experienced with this knowledge may divulge, if moving from one grid to the next how would one know, are there any clues? :?

Yes I know that up is generally North, Left is West...etc... however with the river sytem that is in place it gets really confusing.... at least for me......

I need a Garmin or a TomTom

Your best for naming grids is: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7459&start=20

The old convention was indeed:
A1 A2 A3 A4 A5
B1 B2 B3 B4 B5
etc

However the map expands in all directions, so it broke when the map expanded from 5x5 SGs to 7x7 SGs and even further to 9x9 SGs.

Ever since then it pretty much is a tie between people who say "I live in S2W3" and people saying "I don't understand your system is that A1 or D4?!" and then a lot of explanations on how stupid the old system is because you disregard all players in the outer lying grids without even considering the fact that would also need labels for their grids.

As for finding where you are, try locating yourself on havenmap.tk ; If you can't find yourself there, good luck finding where you live.

Thanks for the response Dat,

It appears that the map provided for naming grids on the link you provided is from the old world and after reading every post nothing is agreed upon and is not what I have heard in this world map naming convention. As for the outside link .tk, OMG the world is even larger than I thought.... I cannot find myself and have never seen any of the towns that are on it let alone any of those major lakes or rivers..... damn I am really lost somewhere in the black abyss.

one other thing, once you have found a particular place.....how do you know where you came from..

Maybe we all need to agree that one moderator sets the standard and stick with it?

Hurry and give my meds so I can get out more !!!!!!

Any other help out there :?

What you see up on Havenmap is actually only about 4 grids worth. There's 81 of them now. People reference havenmap a lot because, unfortunately, it's really the only option. There's a lot of unmapped (publicly anyways) area which you may easily be spawned in.

The best way to determine where you're at would be to find some other people who play and know their general location (preferably somebody in the center grid and another near the edge) and use them to triangulate.

As for direction, you're slightly off. North is actually the top right corner of your screen, with south being bottom left, etc etc.

Generally what people do when they explore, is leave their hearthfire at their camp and go off into the world to try to find stuff. If they run out of food, or get tired or whatever, they can just teleport back to their hearthfire through the adventure > travel menu.

What I meant when I linked you was simply the post I linked you to.

The rest is pretty much irrevelent back and forth crap you shouldn't be too interested in. Ways to find where you are:
1)Find someone near you - If they're friendly inquire whereabouts, if they're not don't.
2)Use dgladkov's client or cartography to get a nice big chunk of your area, compare it to havenmap.tk or to just find your area
3)Use havenmap.tk and hope you're on it
4)Find a direction, keep going until you hit the end of it or find yourself on havenmap.tk

Those are pretty much the best ways to go about it, some safer than others, some faster than others.
