Haven & Hearth - The Guide

Postby Noka » Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:32 am

I've decided to make a guide for new players, in order to help people get into the game. I'll try and get as in depth as possible, and will separate it into parts. Right now, I have one part, and am working on the second. If you're a new player and don't understand how to do things, go ahead and read this guide!... once I have part two up. Part one's just basic character creation and how not to screw up (since so far, pretty much all of my friends have turned up missing a shirt, or pants, or just plain everything), along with the basics explained (what each tab is on the halfcircle, how to build, etc).

Anyway, enjoy the guide! I'll take this bit out when I feel like it and replace it with something better.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now you've logged into the site, and booted up the game via the big PLAY button up at the top of the site! Happy day!
Once you've settled everything on the login screen, you should see a screen like this:

Image

A good character select screen, isn't it? You'll see it every time you login to the game, obviously. Now, unless you've just glanced over, you've probably noticed this button, right here:

Image

Click it! Go on, it won't bite. It should take you to a screen that looks like this...

Image

All you are at this stage is a little spirit. Y'know, this thing, right here:

Image

Now, you're probably asking why you're a spirit and how you get a body. That's simple! Right click the guy to the left of the pool to talk to him!

Image

Following that, you should look something like this!

Image

Oh yes, so, so macho. Right click him again to become a girl:

Image

Girl power! Anyway, I'm picking to be a guy since I happen to be a guy.
Next, talk to the girl with the flag via right clicking her.

Image

As soon as you talk to her, a message should come up, like this:

Image

Following that, enter in your name. I've named my guy Tutorial, because I'm boring and not creative at all.

So now what, you say. Is it time to go?

OF COURSE NOT, YOU'RE NAKED. WOULD YOU REALLY WANT TO GO OUT INTO THE WORLD NAKED.

I DIDN'T THINK SO.

Right click the chest down below to open it!

Image

Anddddd then open up your inventory!

Image

Image

Such a magical sight.

Anyway, go ahead and click the items from the chest and drop them in your inventory!
First...

Image

Then...

Image

You can also hold down shift and click the items in the chest to move them to your inventory, and vice versa!

A minute of organizing later,

SHAZAM.

Image

Now, you say, is it time to go?

NO, says I, you're still naked.

How to fix this? Well, let me show you! X out of the chest, then click on the button right above the inventory.

Image

It's dragging time! Just move clothes from your inventory onto the image of your character. You can also do this with any equipment and weapons, such as the fishing pole and torch.

Image

After a bit of messing around, I'm fully decked out.

Image

Next, we're heading out! We have three choices, Hearth Secret, Wilderness, and Charter.

Image

Hearth Secret allows you to meet up with friends, wilderness plants you randomly in the wilderness, and charter puts you in a predetermined area. Currently, the only charter option is Soviet Russia.

Now, Hearth Secret is pretty simple. You talk to the lady, and tell her your friend's hearth secret. If you enter it correctly, a staircase will appear, like so:

Image

If you want to invite friends into the game with you, you need to make a hearth secret. I'll cover that later, along with kin. In the meantime, I'll enter the wilderness, because this cannot be a tutorial without starting with nothing.

Image

That's the end for now! I'll introduce you guys to the UI next update, along with showing you how to progress past only building little baskets.

Feedback from more experienced players would be lovely!

Holding Shift while Clicking can also move things between containers...
So does holding shift and rolling the mouse wheel while the cursor is over one of the containers. Forwards is to Take Out, Backwards is to Take In...

I think it is possible to reduce the numbers of pictures as some of them are a bit repetitive while being a little more detailed on each one. At the moment it is a a rather bulky guide for making a new character. In the character creation room, what i suggest is to snip out each of the toon for each function instead of the whole screen-shot. That way there is a lot less picture bulk and less "derp" too :P .
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.

those pictures are way to big. try to concentrate them on the essence, not the whole screen

A few suggestions:
Less pictures
Links instead of images (Because you have so many pictures).

Go take a look at Jackard's guide. Something like this: http://i50.tinypic.com/25apx75.png is a lot better than making an image to show what every single thing is.

(You don't have to hold down the mouse button to drag. Just click to drop it.)

After a bit of dragging, I'm fully decked out.

dont use the word "drag"

That's not what you do in this game and you'll only confuse new players.

Done! I've cropped every picture except the first and third to its essence.

Taking your advice, and editing the first post right now. Pictures and words will be updated in a moment!

Working on part two.

Once again, thanks for the suggestions!
