Maximum speed of aiming is based on marks but capped by weapon quality *2, thus if you have a q5 bow, nothing higher than marks 10 is going to make it any faster. If at this point you already had marks 40, then upgrading the bow as high as 20 would raise the speed as well.
Bow quality, for both bows and ranger bows, is based on both carpentry and marksmanship.
While it might sound good to say to raise your survival to get good taproots and nettles, it's just really not viable. The quality of forageables is hard capped by the soil of the tile they're found on. This means even with 1,000 survival, you're going to get low quality (mostly q10) taproots and nettles 99% of the time, and even if you do get some better ones they will still only be in the q30-40 range at best unless you're really lucky and have a high soil spot nearby.
The best way is simply to level your farming, however this isn't much easier. For the good trees you want you're going to need high dex, a source of good clay (for tree pots), a source of good soil and water (likely in the 60s), as well as slowly working your tree levels up by repeatedly making new tables as you get better boards. This also means leveling farming (for fibers for tables and bowstrings) and carpentry (to craft bows but more importantly to not get q capped cutting the boards) at the same time to keep your products coming out better. Also, with a q30 bone saw (which I assume to be about average) your boards from q60 trees will only be q42. So you're also going to need to raise your survival in order to make better saws, or just trade for a good high quality (q150 = 60 trees > 93 boards) one.
Making bows is a major production, so don't expect to do it any time soon. Low quality bows also aren't even worth using, because they aim cap very slowly, and are already half as quick aiming as a sling. I wouldn't use a normal bow under q100 or without 200 marksmanship.
As for damage, it is entirely based on the quality of the weapon. If you had 1 marksmanship and a q1000 sling, you'd hit just as hard as 1000 marksmanship and the same sling. It would be easier in the foreseeable future to just start off raising your farming and survival in order to make better and better slings as your plant fibers go up in quality. By the time you hit q40 sling you should be doing 50-60 easily. This also means that if you later decide to do bows, you can simply start leveling your carpentry as you work on getting the trees up. You also need to level your perception to bring the low end damage up, otherwise you'll always be able to hit near nothing thanks to randomization.
