Problems with the map loading (and lag in general)

I assume this is down to lag (which seems to affect me quite a lot) but was wondering if other people had this issue.

Most times when I log in the mini map takes ages to fill itself in, when I go exploring, the map just doesn't load unless I stand still for a few minutes and allow it to gradually fill in.

Is this just down to lag?

Most of the time, it just doesn't load at all. I've been making a wagon trek lately, and I'm constantly travelling blind. I understand the server issues, so haven't brought it up myself, but since the thread is here...

Funny thing happened yesterday, actually. You know how your character sometimes lags so hard that the sprite keeps on walking off to the side of the screen for a while? Well, the wagon kept going, but interestingly, the camera actually followed it. The wagon kept going for miles, and eventually the game tried loading the next grid- and failed. So I was left with a black screen with "Loading" written on it, and I could see from my (completely white) minimap that I was still travelling. xD

I hope the map in general gets more stable in future. I'm fine with a bit of lag in other areas, but the map is so important.

yup, it's so fundamental to me not getting lost it's driving me insane. I just started with cartography and it's confusing the hell out of me.

A local map is 4x4 minimaps right? do I just need to walk into each quadrant and hit the map making command again to fill up the map?
