Tracking down scents?

Sorry, I don't get how it works. Should I follow the dark slice in the radar? Is it pointing towards the perpetrator? Some people say it works like the Dowsing Rod, and apparently I have to go the opposite side of the dark slice. Is that true?

weird formulation with the "opposite side"
what they mean is that the "arrow" is pointing at you and gets bigger towards the perpetrator
so following the dark slice is correct and it will get more and more narrow
same with the drownsing rod
