find rustroot that looks like a brown crack in the ground

right click it and take it

make a rustroot extract from instructions in wiki

use the extract to see if there are mineral deposits in your area

build a mine hole on any mineral deposits

go in the mine

start mining

make an ore smelter and smelt the ore into bars of metal or into slag

and boom there you go metal

Have a block in inventory and prospect within 10 tiles of the mine site. The character will approach the site and start a mine hole construction site. Add the block from your inventory to prevent it from disappearing when you move away. Add 99 more blocks and build it.
