how do i build a house? whenever i try to put down a house, it says i can't do that

you have to pave the ground with stones first before you can do that.

From the wiki:

In order to begin constructing a log cabin you must have a 5x5 paved area of ground for the log cabin to set down. See Terraforming for information on how to plow a field and lay stone. Log cabins require 100 blocks of wood, 50 boards, and 50 boughs of any type, making it unwise to begin construction without ready access to wood and boughs. The door on log cabins will always face the east, so plan accordingly before construction.
