I need help getting started

I never stray too far from where I started but there's always a bear to ruin my day, any advice?

You can ask in the Dwarves & Thieves subforum to join a village, as you're new you can just restart a character and use their hearth secret.

Alternatively you can get enough LP to claim a patch of land, animals dont go spawn inside your claim.
