Be sure to have your claim large enough to cover all of your stuff. If you don't have seeds for farming yet, invest in exploration so you can find Wild Windsown Weeds to dry on Drying Racks to get plantable seeds.

I typically follow one LP-spending rule: Don't spend LP on something you're not going to use yet. If I'm not going to go hunting, I'm not going to spend all my LP on Marksmanship, because it might turn out my crops are being limited by my low farming and I won't have the LP left to fix that.
