I'm dead and I have no idea why

I logged on today and my character was dead, just on the border of my claim. I have no idea how it happened, I logged out in my claim and now I'm dead and just outside it.

Anyway i'm starting a new char, how do I inherit my old char's stuff and be able to get back on my claim?

I would still love to know how/why I was killed. If I log off in my house can people summon me and murder me whilst I'm offline?

OK there a runestone near my corpse that says

"Tonight I have ended a life but spared a village. Be wary of your scents oh hearthlings."

How could I have left a scent? I took shit from unclaimed land but I don't even know how to trespass, steal or murder. What else could I have done to lead someone to me? Is that list on the wiki wrong?

I believe if you steal something from under a leanto while a hearthling is sleeping there, even if it is on unclaimed land, it counts as stealing, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Never did this, never even approached anyone else's leanto
