Keeping cows

Postby footwo » Wed Jul 07, 2010 8:13 pm

OK so we've tamed two cows, male and female. How do we get them to breed?

Also how often can they be milked? Are there any special instructions for keeping them healthy?

I did check the wiki but information on there wasn't too forthcoming.

They will breed randomly, though it rarely takes long. If you're nearby you'll hear a loud mooing noise, and see a lovely cow sex animation. Milking can only be done after the cow has had a calf. However once it has, it begins to act as a container which maxes out at 10l. It produces 1.0l (at quantity 10, scale as necessary) per 5 in game (1 hour 40 minutes real time) hours. You can milk it any time it contains milk.

As for keeping them healthy, just keep their trough full, and leave some milk for the calves once you have some. Alternatively you can place the milk you collect in a barrel in the pen. The calves can drink from there as well, which prevents their second bar (the tan colored one) from ever dropping, which causes a permanent quality hit.

If you get a second male cow, kill whichever bull has the lowest Q, this will ensure all future calves have better Q.

Thanks for the info guys.

Just a few more queries, what do the blue and tan bars represent?

is it ok to keep sheep in the same pen as cows?

The tan one is health, the blue on is either hunger or milk. (Could be wrong)

Animals don't mind sharing pens, but you should keep tabs on the food because of course it'll be being depleted faster with more animals.

Didn't realize it was blue, thought it was red and brown.

Anyways:
First bar = Hunger ; Goes down as they get hungry
Second bar = Starvation ; Goes down if their hunger reaches 0 and they didn't have anything to eat, this never goes back up, permanently stunts the animal's 'produce'.
