Palisade Building

Postby Silverwind » Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:54 am

With the rather high material costs for an initial cornerpost, I was thinking of first building as many connected cornerposts as I can, then use a battering ram to knock down walls where I want a gate to avoid building more than one initial cornerpost (to minimize materials needed). I would like to get a second opinion on whether this is a feasible approach.

How far can battering rams move? According to the wiki, they break down after moving a certain distance. Can they be repaired after breaking down? With my current plan, there are at least 2 gates that need to be made with the described approach.

Each subsequent cornerpost after the original only needs 30 wood blocks. What is that, one tree? I just think you'll be wasting your time building a battering ram when you only have to make one new cornerpost instead of two.

Do not attempt this with less than 100 buffed strength and a pickaxe, or you will never deal any damage to the wall. Even so, you'll spend multiple full stamina bars and probably a couple of hours of ramming before a single wall piece will fall.

IMO, it is much, much less effort to just build another cornerpost than do this, particularly with a relatively young character. Rams aren't much cheaper to build than a cornerpost, after all.

@Kokain: You missed his point. Re-read. ;)

I am trying to build my palisade walls aswell, there are a few Q's i have.

1. can you simply destroy one of the palisade walls you made by clicking the destroy button, like it works with round-pole fences?
2. If you want to build a gate, can you just build a cornerpost, then 2 more wall tiles, and then another cornerpost and "destroy (with the adventure -> destroy)" button, then build a gate?
3. If built on paved ground, how long until i need to repair them
4. why cant i connect to the games server?

1. Yes and No. Only if you are very high strength + buffs can you even think about taking down a palisade wall with just yourself and a pickaxe. If you click "destroy" it will make a feeble attempt, but nothing will happen (most likely, but then again if you've been around long enough to have a character this strong then you wouldn't be asking these questions in this forum). You'll need a ram and possibly quite a few people with high strength to destroy a palisade wall.
2. Again, you "could" do this in theory, but you'll really need the ram. Just build a new cornerpost on the other side instead.
3. All palisades must be on paved ground, and it is a random decay hit for when to repair them, just watch for them to turn a slightly pink color or darker and then repair them. Sometimes it seems you fix the same section every other day, sometimes when you're waiting for a palisade to decay you wait for a month for any of the walls to come down.
4. Uh...dunno. Currently the server is up, so try again.

That would be 40 leathers and 20 ropes. That is, 200 strings. Oh boy. Ropes were the worst part when I built my palisade, gave up on the second gate.

Really? so you'd advise me to have a large property and one gate near the river? and then over time make a battery ram and get some friends to help me knock down 4 walls to make 2 cornerposts and a gate (much later)

Well... as a newbie myself I would tell you that 2 gates is realistic, so you could try that. I have yet to see a place with 4+ gates, to be honest. Do you really need all of those?
