Tree Planting

Postby Kokaiin » Fri Jul 09, 2010 8:40 pm

My current settlement is in the kind of forest with apple, hazelnut, and birch trees. If I want to plant some fir trees on my plot, which are from a different kind of forest, will they grow?

To complete that: The first trees on a specific spot will take ~twice as long as normal to grow, but when they reach fully grown, they would also have terraformed the soil to the other forest type, so the next time you plant the same type of tree in that spot, it will grow at normal rate.

Fir trees aren't native on your forest ground so they will grow rather slow. When it grows it does convert a bit of its surrounding into its native terrain. The problem is that both forest tile look alike so you don't know which one is its own. I'd recommend just using either a native tree or turning the tree ground into grass to better distinguish it.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.

Wouldn't it change color on the minimap though? And I only intend to grow firs for the convenience of close-by boughs for my new timber house, so after they're gone I'll probably plant something native.

Oh, and I want to expand my plot east but there are two hearth fires in the way. I've never seen anybody there, but from that one thread about how that guy got killed over destroying his alt's hearth fire, I don't want to destroy it, but do they ever disappear?

I think it takes a good while before the minimap updates to show what's happened to the land. I've been playing for 2 days now and my minimap doesn't show any changes to the area yet.

Not sure about the hearth fire thing myself. I imagine they stay lit for good if you don't mess with them.

They will only disappear if the owner builds a new hearthfire somewhere, which turns it into a regular unlit fire. If you want to expand your plot and destroy hearthfires, your best bet is to enclose the area you want to claim as yours in a palisade and then destroy the hearthfires so that the vandalism scents will be unobtainable by people casually wandering by your land.

Good to know about that. If my entire plot is enclosed with palisades no vigilante ranger will barge in, find the scent and do the same to me as that guy in the other thread huh.

The minimap only updates every time the server is taken down to serve exactly that purpose of saving all the maps.

Plant grass in the area you wish to terraform. That way you'll be able to see which tiles have been changed. Trees grow at half speed in grass, just like in the wrong forest type.
