What's wrong with my fence gate?

So I read up on the wiki how to make a gate in my fence. I started 2 separate fence posts, one on each corner of the north side of the field, worked my way into the center, then built the 2 corner posts where I want them. But when I right click either cornerpost and choose "Make Gate", I get a "You can't built it there" message

What gives?

Do you click upon the gate post to get this option? Perhaps you may need to pave. Some constructions do not work without the paving. The pallisade gate must have the paving inside and outside the gate also to be made.

You cannot build upon the ploughed land. I do not see the ploughed tile but sometimes the graphic it lags and you do not see when a tile has been changed. To test for this try to pave. If the tile is ploughed but it is not visible it will allow you to pave. If it is not ploughed it will not allow to pave.

Also, if you think it is not impossible that it may be three tiles instead of two, make in the gap the two fence sections. They are easy to destroy but this will prove to you how many tiles are in the gap.

There has to be two tiles in between the two posts.

I tried right-clicking both cornerposts, each one said "You can't build it there"

I tried paving the 2 blocks (yeah it's 2 I made double sure) under where the gate will be, but that didnt help.

By "inside and outside the gate" do you mean parallel or perpendicular in relation to the direction of the fence?

And no I tried building on the ploughed area and I realized you can't. I know those 2 tiles aren't ploughed

You need to also pave behind within and in front of the gate as well.

If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.

- build a palisade fences won't stop anyone
- claim your land
- don't settle so close to water
- organise your farm in nice orderly fields!

All gates require a 2x3 block settled over them. While a palisade or brick wall specifically requires this to be pavement, roundpole fences do not, however they do require the entire block be of the same ground type. You could have built the gate if none of the tiles were paved as well, or if you'd planted grass over them. It's a bit strange, but it's how it is.

As for "build a palisade"; Not all of us want palisades. I usually use roundpole fences early on just to keep animals out, and may continue to do so depending on if I plan to build a brick wall, as removing the palisade is a major hassle. Palisades are definitely more secure, but it's not always the best idea to just throw one down immediately.

I knew roundpole did not require pavement, but I did not know they required the ground to be the same on each side. So in this instance, the likely problem was that he had plowed the land on one side?
