One really quick question: do you need an empty space right BELOW the chicken in order to get an egg? Can't the empty space be to the side, or in another row?

i think it has to be below. (you could just try and set a chicken on the lowest row of your coop, if you really need to knwo ;))
it can be also the second line below. a hen of mine lay an egg below another one
